Checked Off

Your data lives on your machine, not our servers

What local-first actually means in practice, and why it's a meaningful choice rather than a technical footnote.

Checked Off running locally on your device

There are plenty of ways modern apps try to boost retention. One of the most common is making it hard, or impossible, to take your data anywhere else. We don’t do that.

Bring your own data

Checked Off is a bring your own data tool. Any data you create lives in an SQLite database you have full access to, usable with any SQLite frontend, Checked Off or otherwise. That means:

Why we built it this way

Because we’re a small studio, and we think we can, and we think it’s the right thing to do. We’re betting that enough people will love this app and stick with it past the free tier to support our work. We want you here because you love it, not because you’re locked in.

No required cloud account

Your data lives wherever you choose to put it, and all of Checked Off’s core functions work whether you’re online or offline, as long as you have access to wherever you put that database.

What happens when sync arrives

We do plan to eventually offer multi-device sync. If you opt in when that happens, an end-to-end encrypted cloud version of your data will exist alongside it. Even then, you’ll still have full access to your own data, with or without Checked Off. The cloud version exists solely to keep your devices in sync.

Come on in and check it out. Your data is yours. We think you’re going to love this app.
