All right, what is Checked Off? At its core, it’s a simple to-do app built for people, built for individuals, not teams. You won’t see elaborate assignments. You won’t see Kanban boards. You won’t see a lot of functionality built around tracking timelines and velocity. You will see a straightforward way to organize a list of tasks, with powerful ways to group them:
- Within projects
- Within life domains
- By metadata like energy, priority, due date, and any tag you want to add
Filters that reach across everything
You can also shape your daily list with custom filters. Across all projects, show everything due in the next three days. Across all projects, show everything tagged “Speak with Tom.” Filters like this pull from wherever the matching tasks live, not just whatever’s already in front of you.
Turn projects and routines on and off
You can also turn projects on and off for any given day. Say I’m working on the website today but not on finance and bill paying: I turn the website project on, turn finance off, and my daily list only shows what I actually intend to make progress on today. Routines work the same way. They’re repeated task lists that can be turned on or off per day, so my gym routine only shows up on days I’m actually going to the gym.
No invented due dates
One of the things that matters most to me: you can organize your daily list without ever adding invented or aspirational due dates. Every project is organized by priority, and if you use the daily planning feature, whatever’s at the top of that priority order is what shows up on your daily list. Of course, most of us live in a world where some dates really are necessary. For that, we have saved filters: any task that meets the criteria you set shows up on your daily list whether its project is active that day or not, so you never lose sight of something that genuinely has a deadline.
Your data, your database
Another place we’re intentionally different from many apps is our bring your own data architecture. Your data is your own. It’s in an SQLite database you can access with or without our app. We don’t collect information about you or about your tasks or projects. The only information we collect is about the app itself and how you’re interacting with it. Even our bug reporter doesn’t return any user-entered information except the free-text description field, which you may or may not fill out.
A genuinely free tier
Our free tier is generous, and it’s a genuine free tier, not a free trial. There’s no expiration on it.
AI, if you want it
We understand that people work in different ways, and we’ve done a lot of work to make sure this app is useful across a wide range of styles and workflows. That doesn’t stop at our AI posture. We’re all in on AI ourselves, but we realize a lot of people aren’t. The MCP AI access we’ve delivered with beta is entirely optional, and it’s off by default. If you turn it on, it’ll make a few things easier, but it won’t let you do anything you couldn’t also do by hand in the app.
Simple by default, powerful underneath
So Checked Off is a deceptively simple collection of tasks and projects, with a powerhouse of features underneath that lets you shape it around your own workflow. It’s an app built for you, not for your employer.
