The amount of process behind a small app

What one person plus AI actually looks like day to day - more disciplined and slower in places than the 'vibe coding' stereotype suggests.

Daily planning with filters expanded — a work item due soon shows up even though its project isn't selected

There’s an assumption built into “solo founder using AI” that goes something like this: one person, AI-accelerated, therefore fast and loose. Ship first, figure it out later. Move at the speed of prompting.

Plan first

That’s not how this actually works, at least not here. Before any code gets written, there’s a spec. Not a paragraph of vague intentions, an actual document: what the feature does, why it exists, what it explicitly doesn’t do, how it’s supposed to behave in the cases that aren’t obvious. Writing that down, and getting it right, takes longer than the part people usually assume is the bottleneck. Planning is the single biggest block of time in building this app, not something squeezed in before the real work starts.

The reviews that stay

Once code exists, it doesn’t just ship. It goes through a set of reviews. At this size, with one person doing the work, it would be easy to treat these as overhead and cut them. I don’t. Each one catches a different kind of problem the others won’t:

Skipping any one of them doesn’t make the app ship faster in any way that matters. It just moves the cost of that gap to later, usually to whoever hits it first.

What that looks like in practice

A feature gets specced, and the spec seems complete. Partway through review, a question comes up that the spec didn’t answer: what happens when this interacts with that other, unrelated feature? Most of the time there’s a real answer, and it just needed writing down. Every so often there isn’t one yet, and the review is what surfaces that before it becomes a bug report.

The pace is the point

None of this contradicts the “one person plus AI” premise. It’s what makes it trustworthy. Going fast and being disciplined aren’t actually opposites. They’re just usually sold as one. The whole pitch of this studio is things worth keeping, not things shipped first, and that only holds if the process behind it can survive contact with an actual user. This is the pace that lets it.
